Uganda has seen a significant rise in ransomware attacks in 2026, with over 1,200 incidents reported, reflecting the growing cyber threat landscape. The average ransom paid has increased to $45,000 USD, indicating more sophisticated extortion tactics. Both government agencies and private firms have increased their cybersecurity budgets to over 1.2 trillion UGX to combat these threats.
Despite investments, around 38% of Ugandan organizations experienced ransomware breaches this year, showing the persistent vulnerabilities. Phishing and malware remain prevalent, with 4,500 cases reported, emphasizing the need for enhanced awareness and stronger cybersecurity measures across sectors to safeguard digital assets.
